Paul Stanley, nacido el 20 de enero de 1950 como Paul Eisen, y Gene Simmons, nacido el 25 de agosto de 1949 en Israel, formaron Kiss en 1972. Más tarde reclutaron a Peter Criss, 27 de diciembre de 1947 y llamado Peter Crisscoula, y a Ace Frehley, nacido el 22 de abril de 1951 como Paul Frehley. Stanley toca la guitarra y canta, Simmons hace de bajo y canta; Frehley hizo la guitarrista principal y Criss la batería.

Después de su segunda presentación en el hotel Diplomat de Manhattan en 1973, el productor Bill Aucoin le ofrece un contrato de manejo a la banda y en solo dos semanas estaban firmando con la recientemente formada casa disquera Casablanca. En sólo un año Kiss había producido 3 álbumes con un éxito medio. En el verano de 1975 sacaron “Alive!”, el disco que cambió su suerte.
